My monthly update on some stats . . .

Communion of Dreams has now been downloaded over 9,500 times.  I would like to thank the three people who have been busy downloading so many copies to make my stats look good.  ;)

No, seriously, this is still really cool.  Like April, May saw about 500 downloads – a little bit slower pace than in some earlier months, but still very heartening.  Particularly since it still seems to be completely word of mouth.  We should cross 10,000 downloads sometime this month.

The blog is now just under 20,000 hits, and the average is still running about 70 unique visits a day.  Thanks to one and all who visit regularly.

And bonus points to anyone who can ID the source of the title quote without having to look it up.

Benjamin Disraeli, on the types of lies people can make. I think …

I’m reading about him now as it happens, he made another good quote; upon recieving unsolicited mail he had a standard reply: Thank you for your correspondence, I shall waste no time in reading it.

At least, I think that was him – I should be more sure of myself. :$

Close on the ID there, Troika – was a contemporary of his. And I do love that additional quote!

I think. That or Bob Dylan.

Prince? Naw – he doesn’t speak in public these days.

Someone else who’s famous and from Minneapolis then …

On a slightly more serious note, the name is on the tip of my tongue. I just read a historical detective novel where he was a minor character.

Gah, curse my indifferent public-school education and Google for making me lazy! Curse them I say!

Look in the tags, Brian, look in the tags. :)

Actually, I just checked WikiQuote – and it seems that Troika up above was actually at least as right as I was – it is generally credited to Mark Twain, from his autobiography (where I remembered it), but:

Often attributed to Twain, but in his use of the phrase he stated he was quoting Benjamin Disraeli, and this itself is probably a misattribution as the earliest known use of it was actually by Leonard H. Courtney. Twain did, however, popularize this saying in the United States. The attribution arises from the following passage in Twain’s Autobiography (1924), Vol. I, p. 246 (apparently written in Florence in 1904)

So, I was thinking Twain, but any other reasonable answer will also receive credit. ;)

Yes, I was going to say “Twain,” and figured that someone HAD to have guessed it given the fact that he is one of the tags for the post – and not mentioned in it at all.

Sheesh, monkeys!
