Md. Police Put Activists’ Names On Terror Lists

The Maryland State Police classified 53 nonviolent activists as terrorists and entered their names and personal information into state and federal databases that track terrorism suspects, the state police chief acknowledged yesterday.

Police Superintendent Terrence B. Sheridan revealed at a legislative hearing that the surveillance operation, which targeted opponents of the death penalty and the Iraq war, was far more extensive than was known when its existence was disclosed in July.

“The names don’t belong in there,” he told the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. “It’s as simple as that.”

The surveillance took place over 14 months in 2005 and 2006, under the administration of former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R). The former state police superintendent who authorized the operation, Thomas E. Hutchins, defended the program in testimony yesterday. Hutchins said the program was a bulwark against potential violence and called the activists “fringe people.”

Yeah, we can’t be having those ‘fringe people’ who opposed the Iraq War enjoying the protection of the Constitution, you know.  Who the hell do they think they are??

Is it time to get our country back from the fascists, yet?

Would that be the facists on the Left or the Right side of the aisle?

‘Cause power corrupts and I’m no longer certain that the Dems will just tear it all down when they acquire the Executive branch.

Brian, Fascism = Extreme Right.

Yeah, it was likley a throw-away line, but never mind. There are different species of fascism though (quite interesting really!).

Not that ‘Left’ and ‘Right’ are adequate, but I won’t get started on that! 🙂

There is still alot of admire about America, it has its flaws, but there are two things worth remembering: 1) its still a Democracy and 2) most of the flaws are elected officials. 😉

I’m an atheist, and a cynic. I put no faith in either party, and expect pols to do what is in their best interest.

That said, what we have seen from the frightened frat boy currently in possession of the Oval Office these last 7+ years has been a marked decline in our fundamental freedom.

Will Obama be willing and able to reverse this? I don’t know, and am willing to hold him accountable – but almost *anything* would be an improvement.

(oh, Troika’s comment rolled in while I was posting this. Yeah, it *was* a throw-way line.)

Throw-away lines are all very well and good, but “everything in its place”, Mr Downey. 🙂

Its partly brought on because I’ve been reading about a book called ‘Liberal Fascism’ by some tit called Jonah Goldberg, the central thesis being that Fascism is a product of the Left, its not, and the book also promotes some of the very lies spread by the Nazis themselves. Mr Goldberg is either ignorant or deceptive in the extreme.

Anyway, its of no importance.

You also mention something that I’ve seen else where; that Bush looks frightened. As if he’s now the one that is most looking forward to the end of his presidency. Theres a crisis and Gods not telling him how to fix it.
Funny that – God always seems to understand how to make society better, but hes as flummoxed as the rest of us when it comes to negative equity.

Goldberg? A certifiable loon on the right here. You’ve got his number pretty well, Troika.

I hope W lives to a ripe old age, slowly becoming increasingly aware of just how much he is hated for what he has done to the world.
