Here come “The Beedles”

Here comes the latest round of this generation’s British Invasion:

‘Beedle the Bard,’ on View at the Library

Harry PotterIllustrations by J. K. Rowling accompany one of seven handmade copies of “The Tales of Beedle the Bard,” the latest book by the best-selling children’s author. The copy is on view at the New York Public Library. The skull above accompanies one of the stories, “The Tale of the Three Brothers.” (Photo: Scholastic)

The wizard book is now available for muggle eyes. A hand-written and hand-illustrated copy of J. K. Rowling’s newest book, “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” was unveiled on Wednesday at the New York Public Library, an event to garner publicity for the commercial release of the book Thursday.

I’ve written about these custom bindings before, as well as the collector’s edition.  But still, it is rather exciting that this book is available.  And as I am currently listening to Deathly Hallows as I work in the bindery, I’ve been thinking about the (still?) unknown bookbinder who did the custom volumes, and understand the desire of fans of the series to have their own copy of Beedle.  But as I said before, if anyone spends the money for a “collector’s edition” for me as a gift, I will kick them.  Get a trade edition and donate the balance of what you would have spent to a charity, instead.

You better watch out,
You better all cry,
You better all pout,
AFA is telling you why:
The evil gays are coming to town.

AFA‘s making a list,
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out
Who’s naughty and nice.
The evil gays are coming to town.

They’ll get you when you’re sleeping.
Or even when you’re awake.
Evil gays are bad, not good,
So be good for God’s own sake!

You better watch out,
You better all cry,
You better all pout,
AFA is telling you why:
The evil gays are coming to town.
The evil gays are coming to town!

She’s in Reagan’s mold
McCain’s big surprise
She won’t be undersold
She’s got Sarah Palin eyes

She’ll turn her bullshit on you
You won’t get to think twice
She’s the Right Wing show
She’s got Sarah Palin eyes

And she’ll sleaze you
She’ll unease you
If you’re left she’ll just displease you
She’s atrocious and she knows
Just what it takes to make the kooks gush
She’ll get a Wingnut Nobel Prize
She’s got Sarah Palin eyes

She’ll let you take her home
It whets her appetite
She wants to sit the throne
She’s got Sarah Palin eyes

She’ll take a tumble on you
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
She’s got Sarah Palin eyes

She’ll expose you
When she snows you
Hope you’re pleased
With the crumbs she throws you
She’s atrocious and she knows
Just what it takes to make the kooks gush
McCain thought he’d give her a try
She’s got Sarah Palin eyes

And she’ll sleaze you
She’ll unease you
If you’re left she’ll just displease you
She’s atrocious and she knows
Just what it takes to make the kooks gush
McCain thought he’d give her a try
she’s got Sarah Palin eyes

So, didja miss me?

Got back from Patagonia this afternoon, after more than a day’s worth of steady travel.  Lots to tell – good and bad, richer and poorer.  Though overall very educational.  I’ll be doing that over the coming weeks with a series of travelogues.

But for tonight, I need to work some to correct an imbalance in my scotch level – it had dropped to a dangerously low percentage of overall blood content.  Scary stuff.

In the meantime, you can get some taste of the trip here.

Back soon.

An old friend sent me a link to a video the other day. I’ve been busy enough getting ready to go on vacation next week that I hadn’t taken the time to sit and watch it.

I wish I had – it’s hilarious. Obscene, ranting (in a musical sort of way), but very funny. Well, it is to me, anyway, though if you’re a fan of Sarah Palin I imagine that it will make your head explode.

Heh.

A little paleo-future fun.

Of the apocalypse variety: via MeFi, the BBC has released all the information pertaining to plans from the 1970s to broadcast emergency signals in the event of nuclear war.  From the article:

A script written by the BBC and the government to be broadcast in the event of a nuclear attack has been published.

The script, written in the 1970s and released by the National Archives, included instructions to “stay calm and stay in your own homes”.

It said communications had been disrupted, and the number of casualties and extent of damage were not known.

Gah. I remember that madness.

Well, if someone ever wants to do another post-apocalyptic movie, here’s some great locations they can use, courtesy of WebUrbanist:

7 Abandoned Architectural Wonders of Modern Asia

Abandoned buildings, properties and places take on remarkably different aesthetic character and are treated differently from one culture to the next – particularly in Asian nations where beliefs about the cultural role of architecture or the whims of a dictator can vary greatly. From South Korea to North Korea, Cambodia to Thailand and Azerbaijan to Hong Kong here are seven amazing oriental and subcontinental abandonments from the Near East to the Far East, from skyscraper hotels and pod cities to shopping malls and amusement parks and everything in between.

Some really great (and haunting) images there.

And to leave you haunted in a slightly different way…

This is another goodie from the same folks:

I like to think Gene would be amused.

Top 10 Amazing Physics Videos

Tesla coils, superconductors, and hilarious music videos are great reasons to be excited about physics. Here are some of our favorites.

OK, you may have seen some of these, but they’re all worth a look. Because I’m a bit of a pyro, here are two of my favorites from the collection:

A singing Tesla coil:

And a Reuben’s Tube:

You’ll also find the LHC Rap, fun with water in space, playing with a boomerang on the ISS, Adam Savage (of MythBusters) sounding surprisingly like Penn Jillete, superfluid oddness, superconducting effects, and supersonic compression. Have fun!

Well, this is exciting.

As you might recall, I’m joining my wife for the North American Welsh Choir tour of Patagonia the second half of next month.  Part of that trip will include several days in Beunos Areas.  So, seeing this news item this morning caught my attention:

Angry Argentine commuters torch train in rush hour

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Furious rail commuters in Argentina set fire to a train on Thursday in anger over delays during the morning rush hour.

Television images showed black smoke and flames engulfing the train at the station of Merlo, in the western suburbs of the capital, Buenos Aires. At nearby Castelar, passengers hurled stones at the ticket office and blocked the rails.

“We understand that people get angry when the service is delayed or canceled, but they absolutely can’t attack a public service in this way,” Gustavo Gago, a spokesman for rail company TBA, told local television.

Now, I’m a bit of a pyromaniac.  Always have been – perhaps it goes with being born of the Fourth of July.  But setting fire to a train?  Youza.  Out of my league.

Maybe they’ll stage such an event for us tourists next month, to welcome the Choir?  I’ll have to ask my wife what would be the appropriate song for them to perfom on such an occasion…
